Made this paper cutout to print some cyanotype photograms today. It’s a still from the original opening to Batman: The Animated Series- which is perhaps the coolest intro to anything ever. Oh and I finally got 100% in Arkham City! Those last few Riddler campaign challenges were super tough and took me forever. Woot woot!

Pinholing! I made a two pinhole cameras over the weekend. The first three images are with an 8x10 and the other two are from a… 3x5? I had my grandfather’s old land camera sitting on my shelf for years so I thought it would be nice to finally use it for something constructive.

Hubert! Hey everyone, here is some new work that my brother and I worked on over the past few weeks. It’s a narrative piece that’s also the introduction to a story I’m writing about a little guy named Hubert who goes on a search for why he grew up without a father. It’s still a long ways away from finished but I wanted to share what I’ve been so busy on recently. Also a big thank you to Nathan Perry for painting/designing the faux-princess in the third frame! To talk a little bit about the process- I came up with some thumbnails of compositions which I sent to Mike, and he painted the figures and/or backdrops then sent them back to me which I printed and cut out or turned into silhouettes then built and photographed the scenes. For the most part, they aren’t manipulated with the exception of some color correction for continuity.

Halifax. Someone sells bikes near my place by strapping them to a phone pole with a wet piece of paper for their contact information. Here’s the work I did for the December 3, 2012 issue of The New Yorker Magazine involving paper cutouts. These are a little different from my usual geek-culture material, as they coincided with short stories throughout the issue. I did a bit of post-production on these as well, which most of my other cutout work is essentially absent of. I originally created 5 pieces total, though I’m guessing the one story was cut from the issue.

“Moths”- This is a little series I did for a class. The nature of project dealt with the relationship between what is private and public. While walking the streets of Halifax I had noticed myself looking into windows as I passed them, getting these small glimpses of people’s private life. The thought occurred during the moment and not before- there was no premeditation that I wanted to be a weirdo looking into someone’s private residence. But I think it’s interesting that we are unable to help it, like moths to flame. The “flame” is being caught, I suppose. As for the shots being premeditated, I simply walked with my camera/tripod until I saw something that clicked in my brain- then photographed it and moved on. I only took 2-3 of one frame then kept walking… mostly because it was like 0 degrees (F) outside and windy as a mauf. I think my fingers almost fell off. Your rights as a photographer vary depending on your location. In Nova Scotia, I learned, one is allowed to photograph whatever they wish, so long as they (the photographer) are on a public space. These photos were all taken from the sidewalk.

thief! again! I took the paper figure out on my patio today and tried incorporating a real background. halifax being one of the windiest places I’ve ever been in didn’t make it very easy. i had to tape the whole length of a metal ruler against the back of piece and reinforce it to the wall to get it to stay still enough for the shot.

Thief! This is a little tribute to the 1998 PC game, Thief. I suppose it does have an Assassin’s Creed feel to it as well, but Thief was the first 3d stealth-action game I ever played- so I hold it very dear. Sorry there’s no set-up shot for this one!

Scrooge! I made this one today for my friend, Jaimè Tosquambo. That’s me as Bobby Cratchit, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is designed after Death from Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. I also modeled for Scrooge’s body, and referenced an old wood cut for the face and cap ideas. Happy holidays!

Catwoman! This is a piece inspired by Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One. That’s my favorite graphic novel of his by far. Seriously, if you haven’t read it- well, it’s perfect. That’s his Catwoman I modelled in the window, and myself as the security guard. As you can see from the wide angle shot, most of my set ups are super sketchy when you see what lies just outside the frame. It’s all fairly spontaneous as well. Sometimes, I’ll draw an outline of what I’m about to build- but for the most part, the cutouts all end up as happy accidents.
